Cruel Intemperance - by Dan Rather and Elliot Kirschner: Most news accounts also noted that the leak is āunprecedented.ā If we want to talk about unprecedented events at the Supreme Court, though, let us cast our gaze farther back in our history. The courtās intervention to decide a presidential election in 2000 with _Bush v. GoreĀ _was unprecedented. So too were Mitch McConnellās machinations to block the court appointment of Merrick Garland.

[Thereās Nothing āConservativeā About a Coup](https://steady.substack.com/p/theres-nothing-conservative-about?s=r āThereās Nothing āConservativeā About a Coupā): There is nothing āconservativeā about plotting to overthrow American democracy. It isnāt āconservativeā to undermine our institutions. Quite the contrary. It isnāt āconservativeā to preach extremism and marinate oneself in lies. It isnāt āconservativeā to usher in a radical new vision of American government, one supported by intimidation and violence and rooted in minority rule. Iāve been saying this, albeit not as eloquently as Dan Rather, for years.

Iām thinking about breaking up with TED.com. Their mission of āideas worth spreadingā has a caveat lately that comes with a price tag. I donāt want to become a member, which theyāve been hounding me to do for months. And my organization isnāt about to plunk down the exorbitant amount of money theyāre asking for in order to license their content for use in the corporate classroom (I donāt remember the exact price but it was well beyond prohibitive.

Today, state legislators are introducing ā and in some cases passing ā educational gag orders to censor teachers, proposals to track and monitor teachers, and mechanisms to facilitate book banning in school districts. At the same time, the scale and force of book banning in local communities is escalating dramatically. In recent years PEN America has typically encountered a handful of such cases each year. The findings in this report demonstrate a profound increase in both the number of books banned and the intense focus on books that relate to communities of color and LGBTQ+ subjects over the past nine months.

I swear Iām becoming a musical psychic. Itās weird, you guys. Not long ago I was at the dentist and they had an 80s radio station on. Here are some photos from the pinwheel planting ceremony we went to today. Each pinwheel represents a successful transplant at OSU Hospital. The pinwheel is symbolic: 1 stem with 8 spokes representing the potential number of lives that can be saved (and major organs that can be donated) by 1 hero donor. Over 11,500 pinwheels were planted. Iām so grateful for my husband and so overwhelmingly thankful about his donorās choice to be a hero.

There were a few low moments for me while the pandemic was at its peak. Hell, there were a few low moments for me this morning, but I wonāt get into that right now. I think one of the (many) reasons the pandemic and the isolation really affected me was because I lost a lot of hope. Most of it, in fact. The country was on fire with racial injustice. Trump was pouring gasoline on it.
